ABOUT

Sevgi Onbay was born in Austria and raised in Istanbul. She brings together the different cultures in her life, she believes in combining the different perspectives offered by nature and technology. Together these give richness in expression and multiple dimensions in the act of creation. Intensely functional, her work draws together abstract design and the physicality of clay.

Sevgi has created unique handmade and hand-painted ceramic collections of Nazar and Damla.

Her interest in industrial ceramics emerged while studying at Marmara Fine Arts University in Istanbul. Applying this interest her work eclectically draws together abstract geometry, modern graphic design, historic and cultural references, industrial and home decor motifs, and the sensuality of ceramic material. Sevgi does every part of the creation process - designing, modeling, moulding, glazing, and firing.  Her ‘Nazar’ series was chosen as a wall ceramic in Six Senses Kocataş Mansions’ interior design, 2019. Her other ceramic work has been exhibited in the Izmir Rotary ceramic competition, 2009.

Nazar -

The traditional nazar symbol protects against envy and greed. Sevgi’s Nazar series brings this symbol, known since the times of Rome and ancient Greece, into the present through modern ascetics and design.

Damla - New hand painted porcelain ( work in progress ) 

The journey of my 'Damla' collection began with the harmony of droplets. It continues by design through the combination of my respect for tradition, the modernism of forms, the elegance of porcelain, and the power of cobalt and turquoise.
